The Mississippi River begins in Itasca in central Minnesota. It flows south through pine forests, prairie grasslands, the metropolis of Minneapolis and St. Paul and eventually passes through the hills and hardwoods in the southern portion of the state before leaving the state altogether. Camping along the river is available in public and private campgrounds. Whether canoeing down a section of the river or visiting a favorite spot along its banks, you can choose from a variety of Minnesota environments. Whether you are canoeing down the Mississippi River and camping along the way, or want an escape from the city atmosphere during a visit to Minneapolis, you can set up camp near the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. River Terrace Park is located on the bank of the Mississippi in Monticello, 35 minutes North of the Twin Cities. The park features a boat landing, bicycle rentals and a recreation area. Its 87 sites include sites with utility hookups, pull-through sites and blacktop surfaces. The first nuclear submarine was built in Mississippi. |

The Mississippi River headwaters in Itasca are set amongst a series of lakes and stands of pine forests. While camping at Itasca State Park you can explore the Mississippi River as wells as more than 100 lakes and 32,000 acres of pine forest. The park's campground has 223 drive-in campsites, 100 of which offer electric hookups, and 11 hike-in sites between one and five miles from the campground parking area. Indoor showers and restrooms are located in the campground, as is a dump station for RVs. Crow Wing State Park, set among the Minnesota's dense, out-of-the-way northern forests and along the bank of the Mississippi River, is an ideal location for canoeing and hiking. The park is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Crow Wing Rivers. The Crow River Campground has 59 drive-in campsites, 12 of them with electric hookups for RVs. If you do not have camping equipment but still want to stay in the park, you can rent the park's one cabin. Both the campsites and the cabins are located near indoor showers and restrooms. Charles A. Lindbergh State Park is located among a diverse array of environments including the eastern edge of the North American grasslands, pine and hardwood forests, creeks and the Mississippi River. While visiting the park you can canoe or hike along the river and explore the surrounding forest on a series of hiking trails. The park campground has 38 drive-in sites, including 15 with electrical hookups and two walk-in sites located 1/4 mile from the parking lot. All sites are located around indoor showers and restrooms.
